Introduction to Printmaking - Feilding

Feilding Art Society

I am delighted to be running a series of workshops at the Feilding Art Society.

Reduction linocuts

Have you always wanted to give printmaking a go, but don’t know where to start? This is a great course to explore the fabulous world of printmaking. Come along and give it a go, no prior experience required and all materials will be provided. Each class, Artist Sally-Ann Davies will work with you as you explore a different printmaking process.

Come along to all five of the printmaking classes or attend as many as you like. Each printmaking class is taught separately so you don’t need to complete all classes.

1. Wine and Print – Gelli Plate – Friday Jan 27, 5.30 to 8.30pm

Gelli plate printing is a form of monoprinting, no two prints are the same. This workshop will involve using organic materials e.g. leaves to create layered colourful prints, using a gelli plate, which is a clear gelatinous, floppy slab you can roll paints or inks onto and then place paper onto, to create your prints. You will learn how to layer colours and textures. If you want to bring some leaves along please do so. To continue printmaking, I will provide you with a recipe so you can make your own plates, way cheaper than the manufactured ones. This way you can continue making your own gelli plate prints at home.

2. Monoprint Landscapes - Saturday Jan 28, 9am to 12pm

Monoprints are known as the most painterly method among printmaking techniques. It is essentially a printed painting. The characteristics of this method is that no two prints are the same. Monoprinting is a technique that involves rolling out, drawing or painting inks or paints onto a printing surface, we will be using Gelli plates and PVC. I will show you how to experiment with paints and mark making in a variety of ways on your printing plate. The beauty of this medium is also in its spontaneity and how you can combine printmaking, painting and drawing media. To continue printmaking, I will provide you with a recipe so you can make your own plates, way cheaper than the manufactured ones.

3. Linocut Printing - Saturday Jan 28, 1 to 4pm

Linocut printing is fun and easy, so come along to this workshop and learn how to design, carve and print a two colour linocut print. If you have never carved and printed with lino before, or have a vague memory of doing it at school, then this workshop is for you. I will lead you step by step through the linocut printing process, learning how to use carving tools, then carve and print a linocut. We will use a printing press, I will also show you how to print by hand using a simple spoon or jam jar. My aim is to ensure that you feel confident enough to continue printing with lino in your own home after leaving this workshop.

4. Dry Point Etching - Sunday Jan 29, 9am to 12pm

Take your drawings to the next level. In this workshop you will learn the unique and sensitive printmaking process of dry point etching. This process is where the surface of a plate such as PVC is scratched into using a sharp point, creating a burr. Ink is applied to the surface of the plate and the burr catches and holds the ink. The plate is then wiped back with fabric leaving the ink in the scratch lines, creating beautiful results when printed just with a spoon.

5. Painterly Woodcuts – Sunday Jan 29, 1pm to 4pm

Painterly woodcuts is a style of printmaking I have used a lot in my work, it combines the printing processes of monoprinting and linocut printing but on wood. This process gives your carved images an impressionistic look. I will show how to apply the ink to give a painterly effect followed by carving the bold lines. These two techniques work beautifully together.
